The Surrender

Gia awoke curled in a ball on her bed. She hadn’t bothered getting under the sheets and was simply wrapped up in her blanket. There was no sign of Mason.

“I don’t think I understand what I’ve done. What it means.”

He put his hand out to her. “Come here.”

She hesitated.

“Did I hurt you?” he asked. “In any way that you didn’t want me to hurt you, that is?”

She crawled onto the bed and settled beside him.

He put an arm around her shoulder. The immediate warmth of his body soothed her, relaxed her. Being close to him felt good, she admitted.

“Let me ask you a question, Gia. Once upon a time, you declared an allegiance to God, right?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

“How did that work out for you?”

“It didn’t really.”

“Did he ever show up when you called? Answer your prayers to make your life better?”

“No.”

Mason lightly scratched his claws over her arm. “Yet, you still believed in him.
